Menachem Butler, the President of the Institute for Jewish Research and Publications, is a devoted advocate for enhancing the understanding of Jewish intellectual and religious history. As a writer, editor, journalist, researcher, and distinguished Judaica Bibliographer, Menachem Butler has dedicated himself to advancing Jewish intellectual and religious history and making academic scholarship more widely accessible to scholars, journalists, and the general public worldwide, regardless of ideological or religious agenda. His vision is rooted in the belief that the study of Jewish intellectual and religious history is critical to understanding the past and present, and that everyone should have access to the knowledge and resources that make this study possible. Menachem’s work has enriched the landscape of Jewish scholarship, with access to a diverse and vibrant array of knowledge now available to researchers, scholars, journalists, and the general population alike.
Currently based at Harvard University, he holds the position of Program Fellow for Jewish Legal Studies at the Julis-Rabinowitz Program on Jewish and Israeli Law at Harvard Law School, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the program, developing a comprehensive curriculum, and organizing numerous conferences on Jewish and Israeli law. A Yeshiva University alumnus, Menachem studied medieval and early modern Jewish history at both Yeshiva College and the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies. As an undergraduate student activist, Menachem was actively involved in leadership roles at The Commentator, the Student Organization of Yeshiva (SOY), and the SOY Seforim Sale. Menachem currently serves as an Associate Editor at Tablet Magazine, a Co-Editor at The Seforim Blog, and Founder and Co-Publisher of Shikey Press.
Over the past two decades, Menachem’s research has led to the publication of many works that compile rare and previously unavailable materials, accompanied by insightful commentary from renowned scholars. Through his efforts, he has contributed to the creation of a comprehensive mosaic of Jewish thought and culture, making it accessible to a broader audience. As a result of Menachem’s tireless efforts, the overall landscape of Jewish scholarship has been enriched, with access to a diverse and vibrant array of knowledge now available to researchers, scholars, and future generations. His dedication to the field has earned him well-deserved praise and recognition from leading experts, solidifying his status as a distinguished leader in Jewish scholarship. By diligently curating hundreds of Academia profiles and compiling an extensive collection of publications, articles, and other materials, Menachem has played a vital role in preserving and promoting Jewish thought and culture. Menachem has served as a personal research consultant to prominent philanthropists and scholars in the field of Jewish studies for over a decade, collaborating on initiatives to preserve and disseminate cultural heritage, advance scholarship, and make academic resources more widely accessible. As well, Menachem was recently appointed by Elisha Wiesel, Chairman of the Board of The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, to serve as one of a half-dozen members of the Project Advisory Board for “A Home for the Elie Wiesel Library and Repository,” contributing his extensive knowledge and experience to help shape the future development and direction of this important repository.
